Unlocking Your Body's Potential
What Is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a regulated health profession focused on assessing and treating conditions that affect movement, function, and physical wellbeing. It draws on a combination of manual therapy, exercise prescription, and patient education to address musculoskeletal pain, injuries, and functional limitations.
Physiotherapy is commonly sought for neck and back pain, shoulder and knee injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, sports injuries, chronic pain, TMJ, and conditions affecting mobility or strength. Treatment is adapted to the individual based on a thorough assessment of their symptoms, history, and functional goals.
In Alberta, physiotherapists are regulated by the Alberta College of Physiotherapists and must hold a recognized graduate degree in physiotherapy. Sessions at Ignite are always one-on-one, meaning your physiotherapist is present for the full appointment.
How We Approach Physiotherapy at Ignite
Ignite Physiotherapy is a small, owner-operated clinic in Windermere led by Jill Saban (MScPT, BPE). Jill's additional certifications include acupuncture (CAFCI), dry needling (Kinetacore), Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA), pelvic health physiotherapy, and concussion assessment and rehabilitation. This breadth of training means complex or multi-faceted presentations can often be managed within the same clinical relationship rather than referred out.
The Ignite team also includes practitioners with backgrounds in neuromuscular physiology and high-performance athletic training, which informs how treatment plans are structured for both active and non-active populations. Treatment approaches used at the clinic include:
- Manual therapy and joint mobilization
- Dry needling and soft tissue techniques
- Individualized therapeutic exercise programming

Frequently Asked Questions About Physiotherapy
No. Alberta residents can access physiotherapy directly without a physician's referral. Some extended health insurance plans require a referral for reimbursement purposes, so it is worth checking your policy before your first visit.
This depends on the nature and duration of your condition and your treatment goals. Many patients with acute injuries see meaningful improvement within 3–6 sessions. Chronic or post-surgical conditions typically require a longer course of care. Your physiotherapist will provide a realistic estimate at your initial assessment.
Physiotherapy is covered by most extended health benefit plans. Coverage amounts and annual limits vary by plan. Direct billing may be available, so contact us when booking to confirm. Physiotherapy is not covered under Alberta Health Care Insurance (AHCIP) for outpatient care.
Wear comfortable clothing that allows your physiotherapist to access the area being assessed and treated. Shorts are suitable for knee or hip concerns; a loose-fitting top works well for shoulder or neck assessments.
Physiotherapists are regulated healthcare providers with graduate-level clinical training who can diagnose musculoskeletal conditions and deliver direct treatment. Kinesiologists hold a degree in kinesiology and typically support rehabilitation and exercise programming, often working alongside physiotherapists. At Ignite, team members bring both backgrounds to patient care.
